There are times when you begin a book with little expectation and are rewarded with a wonderful reading experience. So was the case with “I, Girl X” by Annalise Grey.I would not be the target audience for a YA novel in verse book about a 14-year-old girl struggling with her life as her family falls apart around her. Yet in short order, the author had me inside the head of her main character, Carleigh, and feeling what she was feeling.
The free-flowing format of novel in verse was not something I was used to reading. I quickly overcame the uniqueness of the author’s style and became captivated by her verse. Grey’s writing lends itself well to capturing the thought and observations Carleigh. She writes as Carleigh would think, turning the reader into a 14-year-old girl.
The subject matter in “I, Girl X” is serious and complex. Carleigh’s younger brother suffers from mental illness. Caring for him consumes her family and eventually tears it apart. You get a vivid appreciation for what it must be like for a daughter isolated from her mom and dad as they fight without answers to care for her brother.
Annalise Grey is a gifted writer. She has the ability to craft words into phrases that perfectly capture the moment. The book is short, but the message is deep and will stay with you.

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting. A compelling story delivered with careful, honest, and beautiful language. I'll be recommending it widely - especially to my friends and colleagues who teach and read YA literature.
I, Girl X by Annalise Grey is not like any book I have ever read and I loved it. The way it was written was new to me though others may have done it. It just flowed for me and couldn't put it down. You don't get the normal build up to the characters but the feelings conveyed by Carleigh feel very real and raw.
Carleigh brought out the Mama Bear in me in a big way. She is finishing up middle school and looking forward to high school and living a pretty normal life one day then the next her entire life in shambles but she tried really hard not the let if effect her even when she got bullied. All she seems to want is to have her normal life back, but won't open up to anyone but thankfully she has her journal.
I am really hoping there is a follow up book so I can find out what happened with Carleigh and her family. This book is a must read!

The story I, Girl X a novel in verse by Annalise Grey is a book with a very powerful message about mental illness. It tells the story of Carleigh. Her life has been changed by her brother’s illness and this book tells of the struggles that she is going through. This is a story that touched my heart. Carleigh is a strong girl to face what is going on in her family. That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t feel alone and neglected at times. Living with someone with a mental illness is hard and that Carleigh is a teenager when this is happening only makes it that much harder. There are both heartwarming and heartbreaking parts in this story that brought tears to my eyes. I also felt frustrated at the denial that was going on by some. This is an author that has written a book that is full of emotion and one I highly recommend reading. I look forward to reading more of her stories.

This is a novel in verse, meant to be read as more of a long poem instead of as a book I believe. It is a real eye opener into the life of a girl whose brother suffers from mental illness. Her mother denies it, her father is trying to run from it and it leaves her all alone to try to cope with her own changing life.
Finding herself and outcast at the end of middle school due to her brother's actions that a friend posted on social media, all she hopes is that high school will be a time for her to shine and leave middle school behind.
Annalise Grey has really opened my eyes to the ones that are normal and what they have to do to make everyone think that she has a normal life. Then it deals with the fall out when things crumble around her.
A very good read. This is a quick story. I hope you read it. It sure did pull at my heart strings and make me wish that I could just sit down and hug her.
